Thank you

One of the most challenging tasks of the year, I find, is deciding on a Christmas card list. Who do I need to thank? Where do I draw the line? This year, I thought it would be fun to try and write down the names of all the people who have helped me, either directly or indirectly. It’s a humbling exercise as there are so many. Off the top of my head, I could remember almost 200 people, but I know that the real figure is much more than that. Then I thought about the events that were really memorable and rewarding, the people associated with them and why they made a difference. So rather than attempt the impossible, or miss people out, I think the best thing to do is to highlight some of the qualities and contributions that I have valued the most this year. Here goes!

Thanks to everyone who has been supportive, giving me confidence and a sense of security. Everyone who created opportunities for me, allowed me the freedom to do the things I enjoy and am good at. Everyone who has provided inspiration, sharing a vision or adding energy. Everyone who made the complex seem simple. Everyone who refuses to accept that things are “just the way they are” and instead insists on making things better. Everyone who took a risk or did the right thing, even when there was no detailed plan or written guidance. Everyone who has had the courage to speak from the heart and tell it as it is. Everyone who has balanced constructive criticism with genuine praise. Everyone who has been uninhibited by “hierarchy” and other unhelpful divisions. Everyone who has taken the time to be welcoming, sociable and fun. Everyone with whom I made a real connection.

Thank you! Have a great Christmas and New Year.
